In terms of power source, there are two types of epilators: corded and cordless. Also, warm water and humidity may make the process easier and less painful. For instance, you can find completely waterproof options, allowing you to achieve smooth legs and armpits right in the shower or bath. That said, some models are designed for both wet and dry use, which can come in handy. Most epilators are intended for use on only dry skin. On the other hand, if you want an efficient option for quicker hair-removal sessions, look for an epilator that can be set to a faster speed. If you're sensitive to hair removal (who isn't?), slower settings can be gentler. Some epilators operate at a single speed, though you'll find many with multiple speed settings. You can find great epilators with 20 or so, but we recommend looking for a model with at least 40. The number of tweezers on the rotating head will vary, but the best options will typically have more. While quality matters, it's often more about quantity in the case of epilators. As you're probably aware, not all tweezers are created equal. ![]() The tweezers are what ultimately get the job done. When the discs come together, they catch your hairs, usually with tiny tweezers. Most epilators feature a wheel (sometimes called a rotating head) with small discs or plates that rotate at varying speeds. Our testers used them through multiple shave cycles, rating not only how well they removed hair, keeping in mind any discomfort or irritation they experienced. To find the best and most comfortable to use epilators, we put some top contenders to the test. And, of course, make sure you’re choosing a quality tool. This will help to expose hairs so that they can be picked up by the epilator, and it also helps decrease the risk of ingrown hairs,” she explains. King also recommends physical exfoliation pre-epilating: “Take a warm shower and use an exfoliating body scrub, gloves, mitt, loofah or brush. It’s worth noting that you can epilate on either wet or dry skin according to Chimento, the latter is more effective, though also more painful. Either way, to maximize results, “ try shaving one to four days before using one, since you want the hair to neither be too short nor too long,” Chimento suggests. The big down shot? It’s not that comfortable, particularly for areas like the face and the bikini line, where the skin is more sensitive, Chimento points out. (Epilators can also grab very tiny hairs that can be harder to remove by waxing.) Plus, you can epilate from head to toe, be it on your face, your bikini line, your legs-you name it. For something more affordable, consider the Remington Smooth & Silky Deluxe Rechargeable Epilator, which comes with a massage cap that makes the device ideal for use on sensitive skin.Īs opposed to shaving, which just slices off the hair at the level of the skin, epilators remove the hair at the root this essentially damages the follicle, meaning it takes much longer for new hair to grow in and the new hair that does grow, comes in thinner than before, says New York City board-certified dermatologist Dr. ![]() Our best overall pick is the Braun Epilator Silk-épil 9 9-985, a beginner-friendly, top-rated device that comes with a head wider than most, as well as extra attachments like massaging exfoliating brushes and trimmer. ![]() BMJ disclaims all liability and responsibility arising from any reliance placed on the content. Each domain has an SRE, who is involved at the beginning stages of product development to ensure that the domain stakeholders are in alignment with the SRE initiatives. A key way we’ve been able to create this alignment is by having our SREs embedded into domain and product teams. We want an engagement model where product, SRE and development teams are closely aligned. Our goal is to maximize the engineering velocity of developer teams while keeping products reliable. With a long-term goal of “no toil,” our SREs work on identifying and reducing toil to a manageable level across the organization. We used supervised and unsupervised learning techniques to automate our toil. Any triage or resolution that an engineer can perform, a machine can be trained to do the same. As an example, we made sure engineers were not the first point of contact for any alert. ![]() So, to tackle toil, we focused on automating away the need for manual intervention. We think of toil as work that is manual, repetitive, tactical, devoid of enduring value-but automatable. To do so, we followed four key principles that allowed us to meet changing customer needs quickly and release fast and reliably.Īs we moved from traditional Ops to an SRE ecosystem, our biggest opportunity was reducing toil, so that engineers can spend time on activities that drive business impact and customer outcomes. Then as COVID-19 hit, we really had to accelerate this journey as customers increasingly moved to online ordering and delivery to meet their Total Home Improvement needs. And to better manage this new architecture, we embarked on an SRE journey. Bootstrapping SRE at Lowe’sĪs we moved from on-prem to Google Cloud, we decided to move from a monolithic- to microservices-based architecture. Production concerns were not surfaced into the product roadmap, which resulted in delays in making fixes. On-call structures and incident management efficiency were not at optimal levels with too many repetitive and manual tasks, resulting in operational toil. But looking back, we are excited to see how much we have accomplished for our customers as a result.īack in 2018, before adopting SRE practices, we were more reactive than proactive, following an “eyes on glass” approach. Every step along the way brought some challenges. Our SRE transformation didn’t happen overnight, though. With these efforts, we’ve been able to go from one release every two weeks to 20+ releases daily-a 300x increase. ![]() To modernize our systems and build new capabilities for our customers and associates, we leverage Google’s SRE framework and Google Cloud, which helps us meet their needs faster and more effectively. They share about how they have been able to increase the number of releases they can support by adopting Google’s Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) framework and leveraging their partnership with Google Cloud.Īt Lowe’s, we’ve made significant progress in our multiyear technology transformation. ![]() Editor’s note: Today we hear from the Lowe’s SRE team. ![]() Think of them as just extra lines and spaces on the end of the staff. These lines follow the same musical alphabet pattern as the staff does. Ledger lines extend above and below the staff, allowing for higher or lower notes to be shown than would otherwise fit on the staff. When two melodies occupy the same staff, the stems for the notes in one melody are written up and the stems for notes in the other are written down. Note stems are usually one octave (eight successive lines and spaces) long. Stems on notes on the line usually go down except when adjacent notes have flags that go up. Stems on notes below the middle line stick up on the right of the note. Stems on notes above the middle line trail down from the left of the note. Notes are centered on the lines or in the spaces between the lines. Depending on the clef (discussed below), the position of each note on the staff corresponds to a letter name. Notes are represented by little ovals on the staff. The lower on the staff, the lower the pitch of the note. Each line and space on the staff represents a different pitch. After G, the cycle repeats going back to A. The musical alphabet is, in ascending order by pitch, A, B, C, D, E, F and G. Notesĭifferent pitches are named by letters. The first measure would be measure one, the second measure two and so on. Measures are sometimes marked with numbers to make navigating a piece easier. The thick double bars mark the beginning and ends of a piece of music. The time signature determines how many beats can be in a measure. Measures are used to divide and organize music. The vertical lines on the staff mark the measures. This greatly increases the range of pitches that can be noted, and is often used in piano music, due to the piano's wide range. When the bass and treble clef are combined and connected by a brace (left) and lines, they become the grand staff. Depending on where it is, it is given different names. The C clef can move on the staff, and the center of the symbol is always over middle C. ![]() The lines on the bass clef, from bottom to top are: G, B, D, F, A ( Good Boys Don't Fight Anyone), and the spaces are A,C,E,G ( All Cows Eat Grass). Again, simple mnemonics can be used to remember the names of the notes. Instead of an E, the bottom line is a G, and the letters proceed logically from there. The bass clef uses the same musical alphabet as treble, but the letters start in different places. The bass clef, also known as the F clef because it locates the line known as F, is on the far left. This is the bass (pronounced "base") staff. To remember the spaces, just remember that they spell FACE starting from the bottom. (Also popular is Elvis' Guitar Broke Down Friday). One of the most common phrases to remember the names of the lines is: Every Good Boy Does Fine. Many mnemonic devices exist to help a person remember which line and space is which. The staff ends with the last line as an F. Each successive space and line is the next letter in the musical alphabet. The treble staff begins with the first line as E. Since it curls around the G line, it is also called a G clef. The treble clef (the large fancy symbol to the far left) shows the musician that the staff is treble. A simple, unadorned staff is shown below. It consists of 5 lines with four spaces between them. To do this, a system of notation was developed that gives musicians the information they need to play music as the composer intended it. Especially in the days before audio recording and playback, music was often written out as a means of preserving and communicating it.
